History of research
Over the last years, the University of Tyumen has been actively developing its international scientific cooperation links.
University of Tyumen has been actively developing fruitful international academic partnerships. UTMN is one of the cofounders of the BRICS University Network. The number of partners within BRICS member countries continues to grow, currently including three top-level Brazilian universities (Fluminense Federal University, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and University of São Paulo); UTMN researchers are conducing joint-research projects in the field of biodiversity with partners from China, India, and South Africa.
UTMN scientists along with five German universities (University of Münster, University of Kiel, Humboldt University of Berlin, University of Osnabrück and Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences) and EFTAS Company are implementing a multi-faceted research project “Sustainable land use and adaptive strategies to climate change for agricultural zones of Western Siberia” (“SASCHA”).
Under the supervision of N.A. Ivanova, a federal researcher and assistant professor of the department of radiophysics of the Institute of Physics and Technical Sciences, the UTMN scientists together with Nano- and Micro-material Engineering Group of Loughborough University (Great Britain) are carrying out a project aimed at solving the issue of removing nanoparticles from general texture surfaces for experimental applications under the conditions of micro gravitation. The Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR) and the Royal Society of London (Great Britain) provide funding for the project, which is expected last for two years. 
In a consortium with European and Canadian universities (The University of Brussels, Technological University of Darmstadt, Loughborough University, University of Edinburgh, York University, University of Toronto etc.) The UTMN researchers take part in the European Space Agency's (ESA) programme “Biosciences and physics in space”. 
The UTMN scientists also conduct groundbreaking research in the Arctic Region. On the order of Government Accountability Office of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO) UTMN has been pursuing research on the Biely Island with the participation of students. Currently, preparations for an expedition to the Gydan peninsula are in progress. Maxim Mitropolskiy, PhD student at the Institute of Biology, received the Rufford Foundation fellowship to study the ecological adaptation of species to environmental conditions within two complexes of mammalian species.
UTMN is also home to four multipurpose centers listed in the State register for valuable equipment.
In 2014, 29 Russian enterprises had charted research and development work, such as “Neftemash,” which, alongside with UTMN, are conducting an important project titled, “Development and mass production of oil and gas metering equipment on the late life stage”. Scientists constructed a unique scientific test stand designed to imitate the consumption mix “oil-gas-water” with real drill hole characteristics in diverse consumption, water cut, and oil-gas ratios. Researchers use the “Mendeleev” supercomputer extensively during the project design stage. 
Employees of the Center for Biotechnology and Gene Diagnostics are researching the possibility of property improvement created on the basis of a new generation bacterial protein, which improves the immunity and resiliency of animals. Engineering center employees are attempting to establish a theoretical and practical basis for designing, organizing and implementing the construction of paved access routes on frozen ground during the winter months within the extreme climate conditions of Siberia (on swamps and deep-frozen soil).
The International Centre for Inclusive Education was created at UTMN as a part of the EU TEMPUS Programme. Using grant finances, the UTMN purchased special equipment for individuals with disabilities.

The UTMN Business Incubator offers young entrepreneurs the assistance they need setting up science-intensive businesses. The Prototyping Centre (Fablab) participates extensively in exhibition and competition events. Likewise, UTMN hosts more than 382 PhD students conducting their research work across 10 Thesis committees.
UTMN also hosted more than 50 academic events in 2014. Among these included the 5th International scientific conference “Environment and management of natural resources”, and included the provisional results of the international project “SASCHA”. The International conference “Specialization of courts and judges: global practice and Russian experience” was the first Siberian judicial reading, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the 1864 judiciary reform. The Institute of State and Law together with the Commercial Court of the West Siberian District and the Tyumen Regional Court organized this event. 
A Russian research and training conference with international participation “Siberian annexation to Russia: new data” was successfully held as a result of the accomplished scientific project “Archeological research of hibernacles and camps of the Yarmak druzhina during the Siberian campaign”. Also worth mentioning is the trans-regional seminar on the practical methodology of educational research, which is held twice a year by the academic department under the supervision of V.I. Zagvyazinskyy, Ed.D., professor of the Russian Academy of Education. In 2014-2015 16 PhD and master students received the President of the Russian Federation scholarship as a result of the annual competition held by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation to study abroad. This scholarship is granted to students who demonstrated their skills in various fields of science, culture and art, and made significant advances in fundamental and applied research.

The University of Tyumen is the leader in the region in terms of efficiency of scientific research, diversity of research, number of grants received by leading scientific foundations and number of publications in bibliographical databases, such as the “Web of Science”, “Scopus”, and the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI).
